gibson-cl-45-artist-1997
Gibson CL-45 Artist 1997

Gibson CL-45 Artist 1997

The Gibson "CL Series," produced in only a small number of units over approximately one year from 1997 to 1998. CL is an abbreviation for Custom Shop Line, and through the later Songbird, it was succeeded by the Songwriter Series—a new square-shoulder dreadnought-shaped acoustic guitar.

This time, we have received a 1997 manufactured "CL-45 Artist." While the "CL-40" in the same series is a non-cutaway model, this one features a cutaway. It is a piece from the Bozeman, Montana factory period, which is highly regarded for its high ratio of handwork and excellent wood selection.

The wood used has a simple construction: spruce top with rosewood sides & back, mahogany neck, and ebony fretboard. Despite being a Gibson brand, it has a somewhat Martin-like impression. It is said that the design was created by luthier "Ren Ferguson" with the aim of competing with the "Martin D-28," which was extremely popular among guitarists at the time.

Notably, the scale is also 25.5mm, differing from standard Gibson guitars. The abalone inlay on the fretboard is named "Abalone Angel Wing," providing not only good visibility but also a special character to the appearance. With gold Grover tuners, a custom-designed pickguard shape, and a mustache bridge, there is a clear sense of luxury that distinguishes it from other models.

The "30th Anniversary CL-50" was re-released in a limited edition of 30 units in 2019, and as a result, this is actually a rare model with hidden popularity among those in the know, allowing you to experience part of Gibson's innovative attempts in the 1990s. It has a somewhat Taylor-like atmosphere, and since it is equipped as an electro-acoustic with a jack, you might want to install your favorite pickup and use it going forward. (Currently, due to low volume, amplification with a preamp is necessary.) It would be a guitar that stands out on stage.

Although approximately 30 years have passed since manufacture, it appears to have been used quite carefully, with good appearance and condition, and we have no particular complaints. Most importantly, the sound is excellent. It comes as a straightforward surprise that Gibson can make acoustic guitars with this kind of Martin-like brilliance at such high quality. Perhaps because it is a model that receives very high ratings from its owners, sightings of it in the used market over the past few years are virtually non-existent, and there must be many people searching for it overseas as well. Since I have never seen one in person before, if you want to get your hands on it, this might be your last chance!

【Accessories】Gibson hard case only

【Appearance & Condition】There is some wear such as fine scratches and dulling of parts, but considering the age, the appearance is quite clean.
